Scale & Polish
In other words: a Hygienic cleaning
This procedure involves removing the plaque and tartar build up on your teeth. If you are not cleaning your teeth throughout, food and plaque can be trapped between your teeth. It is recommended that you come in for regular hygiene appointments to ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy.
The dentist will clean your teeth using professional equipment. The process of removing tartar is called scaling. The main aim for a scale and polish treatment is to leave your teeth clean and smooth.
What is Plaque and Tartar?
Plaque is a sticky, clear film that is constantly forming on teeth and along the gum line. It contains millions of bacteria, these bacteria can cause tooth decay and gum disease over time. If plaque is not removed by brushing or flossing, it will start to harden and calcify. This hardened plaque is called tartar. And remember brushing only removes 40% of plaque; this can be prevented by flossing daily.
Why do I need to scale and polish?
Plaque can corrode the teeth over time which causes cavities and tooth decay as well as bad breath. If it leads to tartar formation gingivitis can occur. This can lead to more serious gum disease.
Is it painful?
Scale and polish is painless, most people find the cleaning tickling or scraping. If you find things are getting too uncomfortable, numbing gel can be applied to make the treatment more pleasant.
How often do I need to attend my dentist to make scale and polish?
A dental cleaning is advised every 6 months.
